Dominik Baumann

I’m an Assistant Professor at Aalto University in Espoo, Finland, where I lead the Cyber‑Physical Systems Group in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation. My work sits at the intersection of systems and control theory, machine learning, and communication networks. Currently, I’m especially interested in learning‑based control with formal safety guarantees; coordination and control of networked multi‑agent systems; causal inference for dynamical and control systems; and ergodicity in reinforcement learning (questioning expected return as the default optimization criterion when reward dynamics are non‑ergodic).

I received the Diplom‑Ingenieur (Dipl.-Ing., equivalent to an M.Sc.) in electrical engineering from TU Dresden in 2016. I completed a joint PhD between the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Tübingen (advisor: Sebastian Trimpe) and KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (advisor: Karl H. Johansson), defending in 2020. I then spent a one‑year postdoc at RWTH Aachen University with Sebastian Trimpe, followed by a one-year postdoc with Thomas B. Schön at Uppsala University, before joining Aalto.

If you’d like to collaborate or join the group, feel free to get in touch.
